GrabCAD is one of the most popular platforms when it comes to finding and downloading a CAD file: with more than 7 million users, it enables engineers, industrial designers and other specialists to share their creations and discuss 3D modeling difficulties. Today there are more than 4 million free files that are compatible with 3D printing available for download.
GrabCAD was founded in Estonia in 2008 by Hardi Meybaum and Indrek Narusk and bought 6 years later by the manufacturer Stratasys. The original goal was to create a community of engineers so that they could download different models for free from a large library of CAD files. Today, the company says about itself to represent the world’s largest online community of engineers, designers, manufacturers and STEM students – and for good reason, because it brings together millions of users who share their creations, questions, and challenges Exchange computer-aided design.
The Workbench function
In April 2013, the platform was expanded to include a new function: Workbench is a cloud-based platform that enables engineers to securely manage, share and display their CAD files. In practice, multiple users can work on the same file at the same time, making it easier to create more or less complex models.
After the company was taken over by Stratasys, a new function was introduced: GrabCAD Print is a 3D printing software that was developed for the 3D printers from Stratasys to make the entire printing process easier. For example, it allows you to print directly from the CAD model (Creo, SOLIDWORKS, NX, CATIA, Inventor) without exporting to .STL formats or having to track the work of the printer in real time (a warning is sent if the printer is finished or if an error has occurred).
