More and more devices among the best smartphones offer a so-called dual SIM function. This means that you can equip the cell phones with two SIM cards or use two phone numbers at the same time. We show you the best dual SIM smartphones, for whom the function is particularly suitable and how you use it.
You already read in the title of this article what a practical application for the so-called dual SIM function is. Those who make a lot of calls on the job in most cases also have a separate telephone number away from their private phone. In the past, a second telephone was often used.
This is particularly impractical because you had to decide which cell phone to carry with you and when. In the worst case, you both had to have it with you and keep an eye on it. With dual SIM smartphones, you can save yourself the hassle, because, as the name suggests, they can hold both SIM cards. Your cell phone now has two phone numbers, both of which can be called at any time if necessary. Outside of working hours, you simply switch off the professional number. You can also choose which SIM you want to use to surf the mobile internet. If the data volume on the first card is used up, you simply switch to number two.
The best dual SIM smartphones even offer three card slots
Even if, for example, the 2014 Acer Liquid E700 really does have smartphones that can even hold three SIM cards, we mean something different when we speak of three card slots. In the world of Android smartphones, which also allow memory expansion via a microSD card, there are two types of dual SIM cell phone: the one with three compartments and the one with two card slots, one of which is a so-called hybrid slot.
If your Android phone has three card slots, then two of them are very likely explicitly intended for SIM cards and one for a microSD memory card. So you can use two phone numbers and expand the storage space of your mobile phone at the same time.
Price-performance hits from Xiaomi: Redmi Note 9 Pro and Redmi Note 8T
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8T, together with the Chinese version (which is where the smartphone is called Redmi Note 8), is one of the most popular smartphones of the past year. For a comparatively low price of less than 200 euros, the manufacturer has delivered a round package consisting of a decent camera, large battery and solid performance. The Note 8T also offers a double SIM card slot and the option of expanding the memory via a microSD card.
P30 Lite New Edition and P40 series: Dual SIM is standard at Huawei
Huawei has long declared the dual SIM feature its own standard. Both the top models of the P30 series from 2019 and the new P40 devices all offer the option of inserting two SIM cards. Unfortunately, they are “only” a hybrid solution. Here, too, you have to do without memory cards in dual SIM mode. The same also applies to the Huawei P Smart 2020, which is a bit cheaper than the new P30 editions.
Also in 2020, two versions of the P30 are interesting. Both the comparatively cheap P30 Lite and the P30 Pro have been available in a new edition since 2020.
Special cases: Apple’s iPhone and Google Pixel can also use dual SIM
Both Google and Apple offer special solutions for users who would like to use two phone numbers with one cell phone. The Pixel 4 and the iPhone models XS, XS Max, XR from 2018 as well as the current devices of the iPhone 11 series (iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max) support the so-called eSIM. eSIM stands for “embedded SIM”. It is basically an electronic memory on which the data of a SIM card is stored digitally.
